Family and Background
He hails from the Punjabi Baloch Khosa tribe in Dera Ghazi Khan. He is the brother of:

Asif Saeed Khan Khosa (former Chief Justice of Pakistan).
Nasir Mahmood Khosa (retired senior civil servant, former Chief Secretary of Punjab and Federal Secretary).

He is also related to other notable figures in the extended Khosa family, including former Governor of Punjab Latif Khosa (as cousin in some accounts). The family is known for its long tradition of public service in judiciary, civil administration, and law enforcement.
Education
Tariq Masood Khosa has a strong academic background:

Master's degree in English Literature from Government College Lahore (1972).
Hubert Humphrey Fellow in Public Administration from the University of Washington, Seattle (under the prestigious Fulbright Exchange Programme), with a focus on criminal justice administration.
Master's degree in Defence and Strategic Studies from the National Defence University, Islamabad.

He also completed various professional trainings in policing and leadership.
Police Career
He began his career by joining the Punjab Civil Service in 1973 and was later inducted into the Police Service of Pakistan in 1976. Over his nearly 38-year service, he held several key positions, including:

Director General (DG) of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) — served briefly in 2009 (from January to December).
Inspector General (IG) of Police, Balochistan.
Director General of the National Police Bureau.
Additional Director General (ADG) FIA and other senior roles in FIA, including immigration-related duties.
Secretary, Narcotics Control Division (his last assignment before retirement in January 2011).

He also served in various field and headquarters postings, such as DIG CID Punjab. Known for his upright character, he earned praise from the Supreme Court of Pakistan on multiple occasions for his professionalism. He was once recommended by the apex court to head inquiries (e.g., related to major scandals), though the government at times did not notify his appointment.
Post-Retirement
After retiring in January 2011, Tariq Masood Khosa continued contributing to the field of justice and governance:

Served as an Advisor on Rule of Law and Criminal Justice to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Pakistan.
